William Taft, the U.S. representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, spoke before the 37th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Department of State. In his remarks, Mr. Taft discussed NATO’s place in the “new world order” following the end of the Cold War, the Persian Gulf war, and the breakup of the Warsaw Pact. He said NATO would continue to play a large role in the security of the U.S. and Europe, and in fact was the “embodiment” of U.S. commitment to European security. Following his remarks, Mr. Taft responded to questions from the audience.
