Hilary Synnott talked about his book Bad Days in Basra: My Turbulent Time as Britain’s Man in Southern Iraq, published by I.B. Tauris. The book is an insider British account of the early days of the 2003 occupation of Iraq by U.S. and coalition forces occupation.
He discussed his conflict with decisions made by those in London and the United States over how to gain control over Basra. Following his remarks he responded to questions from the audience.
Hilary Synnott served as British High Commissioner in Pakistan from 2000 to 2003 and as Deputy High Commissioner in India from 1993 to 1996. He served as the British Diplomat who ran Southern Iraq for the Coalition Provisional, along with U.S representative Paul Bremer. Mr. Synnott is currently a consulting senior fellow at The International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
