Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper formally apologized in the Canadian House of Commons for his country’s practice of sending Native Canadian children to church-run residential schools. Many students reported being mentally, physically and sexually abused at the schools, which operated for almost 100 years before being shuttered in the 1970s.
