David Ngaruri Kenney , author of Asylum Denied: A Refugee’s Struggle for Safety in America, talked about his experiences as a political refugee seeking asylum in the United States. Kenney came to the United States from Kenya on a basketball scholarship after being arrested, imprisoned and tortured in Kenya for civil disobedience. After college, he unsuccessfully sought asylum in the U.S. and was deported, despite being married to an American woman. Kenney proceeded to successfully regain asylum status in the U.S. after a lengthy legal, procedural, and bureaucratic battle with agencies of the U.S. government, with the help of his lawyer, Philip Schrag. He responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.
