Panelists talked about AFRICOM, the new, unified combatant command for Africa to oversee security, enhance strategic cooperation, build partnerships, support nonmilitary missions, and conduct military operations as necessary. President George W. Bush announced its creation on February 6, 2007, and it was officially established in October 2007. The first panel talked about the progress of setting up this new type of command for the continent incorporating officials from other U.S. agencies. The second panel talked about the foreign policy implications of AFRICOM. Panelists answered questions from members of the audience.
