Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his lawyer responded to charges of perjury, conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice, and misconduct in office, among other charges the Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that morning. They both asserted their confidence that Mayor Kilpatrick would ultimately be found not guilty. The charges resulted from an investigation after sexually explicit text messages surfaced that appear to contradict Mayor Kilpatrick’s sworn denials of an affair with Christine Beatty, his former chief of staff.
