President George Bush, Secretary Michael Chertoff, and former Secretary Tom Ridge spoke to department staff to mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Secretary Chertoff described the accomplishments of the new department.
The president warned that terrorists will try to attack again. In regard to the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act, he talked about his request for retroactive immunity for telecommunications firms that have helped the government listen to conversations of suspected terrorists.
Music was performed by the U.S. Coast Guard Band.
The event was held in the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall.
