Two attorneys not connected with the case analyzed the arguments in yesterday's Supreme Court case regarding the $2.5 billion dollar reduced award of punitive damages against Exxon in the Exxon Valdez oil spill nineteen years ago. Jonathan Hacker supported the Exxon position. Colette Routel opposed the Exxon position. Topics included whether corporations should be punished for the behavior of their employees under maritime law, and whether the amount of damages was excessive.
