Dr. Elmer Huerta talked about his life and career, including his mother’s death from cancer. Topics included the control of pain and quality of life issues and access to quality health care. Dr. Huerta emphasized preventive check-ups and early detection of cancer. Video clips from his television show were shown in the background.

Dr. Elmer Huerta was elected president of the American Cancer Society in fall of 2007. He was the first Latino to hold this position. Dr. Huerta is also the founder and director of the Cancer Preventorium at the Washington Cancer Institute at the Washington Hospital Center. In that capacity he uses the media to encourage cancer prevention. Dr. Huerta has several daily radio programs including “Cuidando su Salud” (Taking Care of Your Health) which is syndicated to 120 radio stations in Latin America and the United States. He also has a weekly television show “Hablemos de Salud” (Let’s Talk About Health).
