Marc Pachter talked about his work at the National Portrait Gallery and the operations of the Smithsonian Institution. He was appointed the director of the National Portrait Gallery in July 2000. He retired recently after 33 years at the Smithsonian, where he held a number of positions including chief historian and assistant director at the Portrait Gallery, acting director of the National Museum of American History, as well as deputy assistant secretary for external affairs and chair of the Smithsonian’s 150th anniversary celebration in 1996.

The program was taped at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, which houses the National Portrait Gallery. close
