Joan Quigley talked about her book, The Day the Earth Caved In: An American Mining Tragedy, published by Random House. She documented the Centralia, Pennsylvania mine fire that began in 1962 and still burns to this day. The source of the fire and the contention about its duration caused great division in the mining town whose population thirty years ago was over 1,000 and today is all but deserted. The author contended that the local, state and national governments did not move quickly enough to address the fire nor the later demands by the citizens of Centralia. After her presentation she responded to audience members' questions.
A video was shown of Ms. Quigley conducting a tour of Centralia for the BookTV crew.
Joan Quigley is the granddaughter and great granddaughter of Centralia miners.
