Michael Wallis talked about his book Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride, published by W.W. Norton. Billy the Kid (1859-1881) is synonymous with the folklore of the America West as an outlaw who came to represent the savagery of the western frontier. In his book, historian Michael Wallis set out to demystify this legend and give depth to the young man born Henry McCarty, but also known as Henry Antrim, Kid Antrim, Billy Bonney, El Chivato, and only during the final year of his life Billy the Kid. The author contended that the image of Billy the Kid was greatly manipulated and that he was responsible for fewer deaths than those of which he had been accused. While the Gilded Age and the Industrial Revolution were reshaping the American landscape, "the Kid" was gunned down by Sheriff Pat Garrett in the New Mexico Territory at the age of twenty-one and became a new breed of celebrity outlaw. Mr. Wallis was interviewed by Rep. Roy Blunt. Michael Wallis, author many books including Route 66 and Pretty Boy: The Life and Times of Charles Arthur Floyd, hosts the PBS series "American Roads."
