Ambassador E. R. Braithwaite was interviewed by John Andrews about his memoir To Sir, with Love, first published in 1959. It tells his story of the struggles of an black man in England teaching troubled white youths in a public school. Educated as a research physicist at Cambridge, Mr. Braithwaite reluctantly became a teacher but gradually began to enjoy his work. The book was made into a motion picture in 1967. The ambassador is now in the process of adapting the book for a stage production in London. He talked about his childhood in Guyana, his education, his experiences as a teacher and a writer, and his travels around the world as speaker and ambassador.

This event was co-hosted by the English Speaking Union and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. close
