The panelists discussed Peter Beinart’s book, The Good Fight: Why Liberals--and Only Liberals--Can Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again, published by HarperCollins. Lawrence Korb moderated. Mr. Beinart argued that Democrats are failing to recognize the threat to our national security posed by Islamic fundamentalists. He suggested that liberals should develop alternative policies for the war in Iraq to counter the aggressive unilateralism practiced by the Republicans. He also contended that liberals must learn to better express their principles by enhanced understanding of the history of liberal foreign policy. His two principles for a strong liberal foreign policy are first, making American power legitimate through strong international institutions, and, second, understanding the social and economic reasons people turn away from democracy. Mr. Kristol questioned the relevance of principles in the need to take action. Mr. Goldberg argued that a lot of frustration with American foreign policy stems from the execution rather than the basic ideas. After their discussion the panelists responded to audience members' questions.
