William Colby talked about his book Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right to Die in America, published by AMACOM, and about the complications that often arise in right-to-die cases, as witnessed most recently in the case of Terry Schiavo in Florida. Mr. Colby discussed the Schiavo case as well as the case of Nancy Cruzan. He represented the family of Nancy Cruzan in the first right-to-die case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Colby argued that these kinds of cases will become even more complicated as medical technology advances and urged his audience to discuss the matter in advance with their family members, caretakers, and doctors. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.

Mr. Colby spoke at the Maine Hospice Council Annual Meeting and Maine Hospice Council First Annual Education Conference. He is a senior fellow with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the author of Long Goodbye: The Deaths of Nancy Cruzan.
