Sen. Boren, chairman of the Senate Select Intelligence committee, and other members of the committee announced the delay of the confirmation hearing of former Deputy National Security Adviser Robert Gates to the position of director of the CIA pending further investigation into Mr. Gates' involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. The hearing was pushed back until mid-September to allow for further developments in the continuing Iran-Contra investigation. The previous week, former Director of covert operations in Central America for the CIA Alan Fiers implicated Mr. Gates of knowledge of the Iran-Contra affair when he pleaded guilty to withholding information from Congress concerning the Iran-Contra affair. He said in documents to the court that he told his superiors of the diversion of funds from arms sales for the Contras during the affair.
