Mr. Gorenberg talked about his book The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977, published by Times Books. He talked about the history of the Israeli settlements built in the occupied territories in the West Bank and Gaza following the 1967 Six-Day War. 

Mr. Gorenberg said that discussions about settlements occurred within the Israeli government soon after the war ended and that the first settlement appeared five weeks after the war. He also talked about President Lyndon Johnson’s reaction to the building of the settlements and the level of engagement in the issue by the Bush administration. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
