Representative Cunningham spoke to reporters outside the U.S. District Court building in San Diego, CA about his plea of guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, mail and wire fraud, and tax evasion. In his plea he admitted to taking $2.4 million in bribes in a case that grew from an investigation into the sale of his home to a wide-ranging conspiracy involving payments in cash, vacations and antiques. In his sometimes tearful remarks he said he felt shame for his actions, accepted that he might face a jail term, and that he would continue to work with federal prosecutors.
