Richard Stengel interviewed Ahmed Kathrada about his book Memoirs, published by Zebra Press. It chronicles his life as a political activist in South Africa. Mr. Kathrada explained that his anti-apartheid activism began at the age of 10 and eventually landed him in jail for 26 years. The author described his close relationship with Nelson Mandela while they were imprisoned together and recounted burying the original draft of President Mandela’s autobiography during the time of his imprisonment. Following the discussion, Mr. Kathrada responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.

Ahmed Kathrada was an advisor to President Nelson Mandela, and now serves as the chairperson of the Robben Island Museum Council and of the Ex-Political Prisoner’s Committee. close
