Mr. Taylor interviewed Associate Justice Stephen Breyer about Active Liberty: Interpreting Our Democratic Constitution, published by Knopf. In his book, Justice Breyer discussed the Constitution’s ability to adapt to current problems and explains that the decisions he makes in cases are guided by his philosophy that the Constitution aims to promote public participation in our democracy. He spoke on the themes of his book. Noting the relationship between free speech and active liberty, Justice Breyer said, “You can’t have much democracy if people aren’t allowed to talk to each other about what kind of government they want.” Following the interview, Justice Breyer responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
