The 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission began final deliberations before submitting its report to the president on September 8, 2005. Commissioners heard reports for staff members and considered several motions and amendments to Defense Department recommendations.

In the afternoon of the second day of the final hearings, motions focused on recommendations for Air Force base realignments and closures. Mr. Small presented a review and analysis of the Air Force’s recommendations for closure and realignment. Bases considered for closure included Galena Airport Forward Operations Location (AK) and Onizuka Air Force Station (Sunnyvale, CA). Commission members supported the closure of both installations.

Bases considered for realignment included Eielson Air Force Base (AK), Moody Air Force Base (GA), and Shaw Air Force Base (SC).
