The 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission continued final deliberations before submitting its report to the president on September 8, 2005. Commissioners heard from staff members on Defense Department recommendations and made motions for changes to the recommendations
In the afternoon of the second day of the final hearings, motions focused on recommendations for Joint Cross Service Groups. Mr. Van Saun and his analysts completed analyses of the seven joint cross service groups of the Department of Defense: education and training, headquarters and support, industrial, intelligence, medical, supply and storage, and technical.
The Commission considered such issues as the consolidation of maritime research and development, relocation of nuclear testing and evaluation, and the creation of a Navy Integrated Weapons and Armaments RDAT&E (Research, Development and Acquisition, Test and Evaluation) center. They also considered proposals involving the creation of an Integrated Weapons and Armament Specialty Site for Guns and Ammunition.
Installations considered for realignment included Naval Base Ventura County (CA), Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (VA), Naval Station Newport (RI), Patrick Air Force Base (Cape Canaveral, FL), Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (IN), Naval Surface Warfare Center Louisville (KY), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (OH), Robbins Air Force Base (GA), Tinker Air Force Base (OK), and Hill Air Force Base (UT).
