Using archival pictures, Candice Millard detailed Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of then uncharted territory throughout the Amazon rainforest toward the end of his life. The former president, along with four others, set out on this journey after he was defeated in the 1912 election. The author described the hardships they faced including starvation, disease, and a murder within the group.
