On Wednesday, September 15, 2004, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens spoke at the annual Stevens Awards luncheon hosted by the Chicago Bar Association. A native of Chicago, Justice Stevens served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit before he was named to the Supreme Court by President Gerald Ford in 1975. He talked about the Court’s reputation for secrecy, his majority decision in last spring’s Guantanamo case, and what he did on his summer vacation this year.
On Wednesday, September 29, 2004 Theodore Olson and Walter Dellinger appeared on Washington Journal to discuss the Supreme Court, the judicial nomination process, and some of the major cases in the October 2004 Term that would begin the next Monday. The nine justices of the Court had served together for 10 years -- the longest stretch without a vacancy since 1823. Mr. Dellinger was Acting Solicitor General during the 1996-1997 term for President Bill Clinton; Mr. Olson stepped down last spring after three years as Solicitor General for President George W. Bush. The former Solicitors General responded to telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail from viewers.
