Mr. Cannon discussed his numerous interactions with the former president, who he described as being distant from his family and acquaintances. The book, Mr. Cannon said, was intended to record a contemporary impression of the Reagan presidency through interviews of acquaintances rather than a historical record. Mr. Cannon said he hoped the book would provide historians of the future a greater insight into the Reagan presidency than may be provided by the Reagan archives.
