Author Lauren Kessler talked about her book, Clever Girl: Elizabeth Bentley, the Spy Who Ushered in the McCarthy Era, published by HarperCollins. The book is a biography of the little-known 'Red Queen Spy', Elizabeth Bentley. A Vassar-educated schoolteacher, Bentley became romantically involved with a KGB agent in the 1930s, and eventually became a communist agent. During World War II, she directed two of the largest espionage networks in the U.S. But in 1945, Ms. Bentley turned herself in to the FBI and became an important informant. Bentley later testified before Congress and at the trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. Ms. Kessler talked about the details of the spy case and its connection to the McCarthy era. close
