Italian journalist Riccardo Orizio discussed his book Talk of the Devil: Encounters with Seven Dictators, published by Walker and Company. The book profiles seven infamous leaders whose careers ended in disgrace and who were living in relative obscurity. Based on personal interviews with the subjects and on files Mr. Orizio amassed during his years as a foreign correspondent, the book describes the current lives of the dictators, their perspectives on their former administrations and possible plans for the future. The seven rulers include former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who, according to Mr. Orizio, feels “only nostalgia” for his regime; Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier of Haiti, who mainly laments the loss of his fortune; and the wife of former Yugoslavian leader Slobodan Milosevic, Mira Markovic. Ms. Markovic describes herself and her husband as “old-fashioned sentimentalists.” She also points out that the West formerly supported Kosovo, the location of a base of operations for Osama bin Laden. Following his presentation, Mr. Orizio answered questions from members of the audience.
