Sol Stern discussed his book Breaking Free: Public School Lessons and the Imperative of School Choice, published by Encounter Books. The book explores the topic of school choice for inner-city families. Drawing on personal observation as a parent of New York City schoolchildren, as well as conversations with students, educators and other parents, Mr. Stern contends that privatizing education and initiating voucher programs will present impoverished minority children with options beyond failing neighborhood schools. He goes on to describe successful applications of these programs in cities such as Cleveland and Milwaukee, where inner-city youth were allowed to attend parochial and private schools. The book also details the political history of the New York City public school system and its teachers' unions. After his presentation, Mr. Stern answered questions from members of the audience.
