Former Ambassador Zimmermann talked about United States international expansion around the beginning of the 20th century. He is the author of First Great Triumph: How Five Americans Made their Country a World Power, published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. The book traces the history of United States international expansionism between the years of 1898-1903 with conquests that included the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, and Panama. Mr. Zimmermann also reveals how five men: John Hay, Captain Alfred T. Hagan, Elihu Root, Henry Cabot Lodge, and Theodore Roosevelt became the driving forces that led the U.S. to burst onto the international stage.
