Former Ambassador Zimmermann talked about United States international expansion around the beginning of the 20th century. He is the author of First Great Triumph: How Five Americans Made Their Country a World Power, published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. The book traces the history of United States international expansionism between the years of 1898-1903 with conquests that included the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, and Panama. Mr. Zimmermann also reveals how five men: John Hay, Captain Alfred T. Hagan, Elihu Root, Henry Cabot Lodge, and Theodore Roosevelt became the driving forces that led the U.S. to burst onto the international stage. After his remarks, he answered questions from members of the audience.
