Officials of the Gilder Lehrman Institute presented the Frederick Douglass Book Prize for the best book of the year on the history of slavery. This year’s winner, David Blight, is the author of Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory. The book is about how the conflict was popularly remembered in the 50 years following the Battle of Appomattox. Dr. Davis talked about the book he edited, In the Image of God, which is a compilation of essays on the origins, experience and legacy of slavery.
