Mr. Weintraub talked about his new book, Silent Night: The Remarkable 1914 Christmas Truce, published by The Free Press. The book tells the story of the cease-fire on Christmas Eve 1914 during World War I. The event began as the British Army and the German Army separately began singing the same Christmas carols in their different languages. As the two sides heard each other, the German army began making Christmas trees by lighting candles in the branches of trees on the hillsides. Eventually the cease-fire escalated into a full-scale truce, during which time the soldiers, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, met to exchange military ensignia, letters, and play sports. This was the only time during any major war in which a complete truce was honored in celebration of Christmas. After the presentation, the author answered questions from members of the audience.
