Geneive Abdo and Jonathan Lyons discussed their book Answering Only to God: Faith and Freedom in Twenty-First-Century Iran, published by Henry Holt and Company. The authors worked in Iran from 1998 to 2001 as the first American journalists to be allowed in since the revolution of 1979. The book chronicles their stay in Iran and gives insight into the events that ultimately led to the revolution. The authors conducted hundreds of interviews with Iranians in order to form a more complete picture of the people and culture of Iran. The authors also discuss how Iran’s Islamic leadership faces challenges today from other countries as well as from within. The authors, who are also husband and wife, answered questions from members of the audience after their presentation. close
