Senator Chuck Hagel talked about his life and career in politics and the private sector. Born in North Platte, Nebraska in 1946, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 1996. Chuck Hagel enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968. He served in Vietnam, along with his brother, as a squad leader in the Army’s 9th Infantry division. When he returned from Vietnam, he became a radio talk show host in Omaha, and later was a Washington lobbyist for the Firestone Tire Co. In 1981 President Reagan selected him as the Deputy Director of the Veterans Administration. He later co-founded a cellular telephone company, Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc. Married, with two young children, Senator Hagel talked about growing up in Nebraska, his experiences in Vietnam, his business career, and his interest in politics. close
