Professor Murray Sperber talked about his book, Beer and Circus: How Big-Time College Sports Is Crippling Undergraduate Education, published by Henry Holt and Company. The book re-evaluates college sports and talks about college athletics, money and corruption. He talked about the impact of intercollegiate athletics on undergraduate education. Using information from questionnaires and interviews with students, faculty and college administrators, Professor Sperber asserted that many schools no longer give a majority of their undergraduates a meaningful education. He believes the schools substitute a party atmosphere to keep their students happy. Professor Sperber explained the origins of beer and circus; the epidemic of student binge drinking on campus; and the four cultures found on campus: collegiate, academic, rebel and vocational. close
