The Senate continued the impeachment trial of President Clinton with the second day of presentations by the president’s defense team. White House Deputy Counsel Cheryl Mills addressed the charges in Article II which dealt with obstruction of justice. She focused on gifts exchanged between the president and Monica Lewinsky. Near the end of her presentation she specifically rebutted House Manager Bob Barr’s contention that failure to convict would impair civil rights and sexual harassment laws, saying that the president’s rights to a fair trial were equally important. close
