The Senate met to consider articles of impeachment passed by the House of Representatives on December 19, 1998. Chief Justice Rehnquist was sworn in as presiding officer by President Pro-tempore Strom Thurmond. Chief Justice Rehnquist then administered the oath to the Senate who would serve as a jury. Senators proceeded to the well of the Senate to sign the Oath Book.
