Mr. Ambrose spoke about how the Spanish-American War shaped U.S. foreign policy in the early twentieth century and the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. Congress declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. That year Roosevelt(who became president in 1901) headed up a group of volunteers known as the Rough Riders, led a successful charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba, and thereby became a nationwide figure.
