State Opening of Parliament

The ceremonial state opening of Parliament begins with the Queen’s procession leaving Buckingham Palace, passing Whitehall Palace, and arriving at the Old Palace Yard of Westminster. The Queen dons her parliamentary robe and crown, orders Black Rod to summon the members of the House of Commons, then delivers her annual speech to the members of Parliament. The speech traditionally outlines the legislative agenda of the government for the upcoming year. An excellent narrative is provided by David Dimbleby. He also interviews members of Parliament about the ceremony, key points of the speech and the recent decision to televise proceedings of the House of Commons.
