Status of the Bald Eagle

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne removed the American bald eagle, once nearly extinct, from the threatened species list at a ceremony near the Jefferson Memorial. The eagle was moved from the endangered to the threatened species list in 1995. While no longer declared endangered, the bald eagle will continue to be protected by a 1940 federal law that makes it illegal to kill the bird and by state statutes.

Anti-Cancer Drug Pricing

The subcommittee met to discuss the issues surrounding development of a new cancer drug and the implications of its manufacturing by national drug companies. Recently it has been discovered that the bark of the Pacific Yew tree contains a substance called Taxal, which is thought to aid in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The trees are found in federal old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, which are protected by wildlife and preservation acts. Bristol-Myers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company, has entered into a number of exclusive agreements for development of drugs from the substance Taxal. The subcommittee also examined whether these agreements may fail to protect consumers from potential overpricing of drugs manufactured by the company.
