Recently it has been discovered that the bark of the Pacific Yew tree contains a substance called Taxal, which is thought to aid in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The trees are found in federal old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, which are protected by wildlife and preservation acts. Bristol-Myers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company, has entered into a number of exclusive agreements for development of drugs from the substance Taxal.
