      <description>Stephen Carter talked about his novel, [The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln]. He talked about how the book arose out of speculations about what could have happened if President Lincoln had survived what was his assassination. This scenario includes other efforts of his enemies to remove him from the White House.
He was interviewed while at the 12th annual National Book Festival, held on the National Mall.
The program opened and closed with scenes of the festival and scheduling information.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Emperor of Ocean Park]</title>
      <description>Mr. Carter talked about his novel [The Emperor of Ocean Park,] published by Knopf. This is the first novel from the author of seven non-fiction books. The story focuses on the death of the patriarch of an elite black family. Touching upon sexual, racial and religious anxieties, the story also sheds light on the world of wealthy black communities and their attitudes toward their history. Mr. Carter also read passages from his book and answered questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby]</title>
      <description>Mr. Carter attended Stanford University and Yale University Law School. He discussed the problem of whites opposed to affirmative action being labelled racist, and blacks opposed to affirmative action being seen as "traitors."  He said he wrote the book to promote the benefits of affirmative action and to get rid of the "rhetoric and name-calling."  He said that it is important to open higher educational opportunities to non-whites, but after college or entry-level positions, the need for affirmative action has ended. He cited his own college education as a model of affirmative action.</description>

      <description>Solicitor General Starr moderated the panel discussion. Starr gave a brief review of the judicial role in separation of powers disputes. Professor Carter focused on disputes between the courts and another branch of the Federal government. He criticized the Supreme Court's recent application of judicial review in the cases of [Morrison v. Olson] and [Mistretta v. United States]. Professor Davis contradicted the Federalist Society's statement that judges should decide only what the law is and not what it should be.</description>
