Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Accident

Participants spoke about lessons learned from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan. Critics of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) spoke directly to commissioners, saying the agency was too cozy with the industry, and had not done nearly enough to implement new safety recommendations in the wake of the 2011 Japanese earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent power plant accident. The NRC meeting also included speakers from the nuclear power industry, who said the industry would meet its deadlines for the highest priority recommendations.

Enhancing Reactor Safety

Commissioners testified on the NRC's 90 day report, which was released in July. It laid out numerous areas for improvement, based on the experience in Japan after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. American plants need to plan for simultaneous accidents at adjacent reactors, something they have never done.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) established a task force to review U.S. nuclear plant regulations in the wake of the Japanese Nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Documents released in advance of the meeting indicated that the task force believed U.S. nuclear plants had good emergency procedures and remained safe. The meeting came days after the [New York Times] reported that some critics of the NRC believed it had too close of a relationship with the nuclear industry. This was a preliminary meeting, and the task force's final report to the commission was due in July.
