      <title>Federal Response to Rise in Autism Rates</title>
      <description>Domestic and advocacy group officials testified about autism. Among the topics they discussed were efforts to increase awareness and understanding of the disease, the cost of the disease, limited public health resources, and public health policy. Representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) denied a link between rising autism rates and vaccinations. Representative Burton showed a video about research on the effect of mercury on the brain.</description>

      <title>Consumer Genetic Testing Issues</title>
      <description>The National Research Council and Institute of Medicine held a symposium to explore the health, policy, and ethical implications of direct-to-consumer genetic testing.
 
 Scientists spoke about the development and use of direct-to-consumer genetic tests. Among the issues they addressed were their uncertain analytical and clinical validity, questionable clinical utility, future types of genetic testing, possible regulation to protect consumers, and ethical issues associated with marketing genetic tests. Participants responded to questions from the audience.</description>
