      <title>Book Discussion on [Blood and Thunder]</title>
      <description>Hampton Sides talked about his book, [Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West], in which he chronicles the history of the American conquest of the western United States, and the involvement of trapper and soldier Kit Carson.
C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2013 LCV Cities Tour" in Santa Fe, New Mexico to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2.</description>

      <description>Authors talked about their books on famous fugitives. They also responded to questions from members of the audience. Skip Hollandsworth moderated.
The panelists were: Malcolm Beith, [The Last Narco: Inside the Hunt for El Chapo, the World's Most Wanted Drug Lord]; Jonathan Eig, [Get Capone]; Hampton Sides, [Hellbound on His Trail: The Stalking of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the International Hunt for His Assassin]; and James Swanson, [Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln's Corpse].
The program "Literature on the Lam: Famous Fugitives" was held in the C-SPAN/Book TV Tent of the Texas Book Festival.
The program opened and closed with scenes of the book festival and programming information.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Hellhound on His Trail]</title>
      <description>Hampton Sides recounts the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and profiles his assassin, James Earl Ray. The author details Ray's escape from the Missouri State Penitentiary in 1967, his travels throughout the South, Mexico, and Los Angeles under the assumed name Eric Galt, and his assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis on April 4, 1968. Following the assassination the FBI conducted a sixty-five day manhunt. Hampton Sides presented his book at the Free Library of Philadelphia.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Blood and Thunder]</title>
      <description>Hampton Sides talked about his book [Blood and Thunder: An Epic of the American West], published by Doubleday. He described the violence and deception used by American explorers against Indians in their conquest of Navajo country. He also talked about America's 19th century expansion into the American Southwest and the military expeditions led by former fur trapper Kit Carson. He explained that Carson was not a self-promoter and did not enjoy his celebrity or the dime novels about his exploits. After his presentation the author responded to students' questions.
 
 Mr. Sides addressed a group of students enrolled in a course on the American West at Columbia University.</description>

      <title>Nonfiction Page Turners:  Finding the Story</title>
      <description>Moderated by Mr. Taylor, prize-winning nonfiction writers described how they found and developed the ideas for their popular nonfiction books. After their remarks they answered audience members' questions.
 
 Ms. Greene, twice a National Book Award finalist, is the author of [Last Man Out, The Temple Bombing], and [Praying for Sheetrock]. Her current project is a book about Ethiopia's AIDS orphans, of whom she has adopted two. Mr. Junger, the author of [The Perfect Storm] and [Fire], won the National Magazine Award for 2000. He is at work on a book about a 1963 murder. Mr. Sides, winner of the 2002 PEN USA Award, is the author of [Ghost Soldiers, Americana], and [Stomping Grounds]. He is at work on a narrative history about the Indian Wars of the American Southwest. Ms. Sobel is the author of [Longitude] and [Galileo's Daughter], a 2000 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in biography. Her new book, [The Planets], will be published by Viking in October. Nick Taylor has authored or co-authored ten books of nonfiction, including [John Glenn: A Memoir]. He is working on a page-turning history of the Works Progress Administration.</description>

In a collection of thirty essays, Mr. Sides attempts to define what America "means". He profiles several individuals, including skateboarder Tony Hawk and three survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
