Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations

Witnesses testified about new mamography recommendations issued by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force on November 16, 2009. The new guidelines had advised against annual mammograms for women under 50 who were at low risk of breast cancer. Witnesses explained the recommendations for screenings and defended the group's guidelines, but acknowledged "poor" communication in explaining them to women. Several members also questioned how the guidelines might affect health care reform legislation and whether insurance companies would "ration" services for women who desired mammograms.

Radioactive Waste Importation

Witnesses testified about the Radioactive Import Deterrence Act (H.R. 515), which would ban the importation of certain kinds of radioactive waste. At issue was a Utah company's plan to import 20,000 tons of low-level radioactive waste from Italy which would be processed in Tennessee and compacted to 1,600 tons for storage at a facility in Utah.
Tennessee Congressman Bart Gordon, one of the lead sponsors of this bill, took part in this hearing. He is not on this subcommittee, but he is on the full committee, and he chairs the House Science and Technology Committee.

Members debated various provisions and amendments to health care reform legislation. They focused on a voluntary insurance program meant to help families with the costs of long-term health care. The program would be financed by a voluntary payroll deduction which would pay a modest daily cash benefit meant to help people pay for services to allow them to stay in their homes later in life.

Part 2 of 3, joined in progress.
