      <description>Bob Woodward talked about his new book, [The Price of Politics]. The book chronicles the inside story of President Obama and Congress' efforts to reach an agreement on raising the debt ceiling, tax policy, and budget cuts. Mr. Woodward said he concluded in the book that all participants shared blame for pushing the problem off until after the 2012 election, but also that, "The president is the one who has to work his will or find a way to do that. In this case he did not."

      <description>Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, the two [Washington Post] reporters who broke the Watergate story, were among the featured speakers in a panel discussion on investigative journalism and the digital age. Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Woodward recounted what happened and how they uncovered the facts in the scandal. Mr. Bernstein in his remarks called the story an assault on the U.S. democracy that simultaneously showed that the U.S. system of governance worked. Both agree that reporters should go after the power centers and hold them accountable, citing the Penn State sex abuse case as an example.

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Secret Man:  The Story of Watergate\'s Deep Throat]</title>
      <description>Bob Woodward talked about his book [The Secret Man:  The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat], published by Simon and Schuster. Former assistant director of the FBI Mark Felt recently revealed that he was Deep Throat, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's anonymous source for information used to uncover the Watergate break-in scandal during the presidency of Richard Nixon. Bob Woodward chronicled the relationship between himself and Mr. Felt in this book. In it, the author writes about the motivations Mr. Felt had for coming forth with the insider's information as well as about his years in the FBI with then-director J. Edgar Hoover. Mr. Woodward discussed his investigation and his relationship with Mr. Felt over the years with Mr. Seigenthaler. He then answered questions from members of the audience. Among issues discussed were Mr. Woodward's book about the Bush administration, [Plan of Attack], and the state of journalism today.

 Bob Woodward is an Assistant Managing Editor for the [Washington Post]. He shared a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for the [Washington Post]'s coverage of the Watergate case. He is the author of several books including [Bush at War, Plan of Attack, The Choice, The Agenda: Inside the Clinton White House] and [All the President's Men].
 
 James Mann is currently senior writer in residence in the Center for Strategic and International Studies International Security Program. His books include [Beijing Jeep, About Face:  A History of America's Curious Relationship With China From Nixon to Clinton] and [Rise of the Vulcans:  The History of Bush's War Cabinet].</description>

Chris Matthews hosts "Hardball" on MSNBC and CNBC. He writes a nationally syndicated column for the San Francisco Chronicle. He is the author of "Hardball" and "Kennedy and Nixon." He was Washington Bureau Chief of the San Francisco Examiner from 1987 to 2000. Prior to becoming a journalist, he was a White House aide and speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) and a senior aide to House Speaker Tip O'Neill (1981-1987).</description>
