      <description>Attorney General Eric Holder testified on the government's gun smuggling sting "Operation Fast and Furious." A The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ran the operation between 2009 and 2010 with the goal of bringing arms smuggling charges against Mexican drug cartel members. In the hearing Chair Issa and his Republican colleagues said that Justice Department officials were suppressing evidence of the gun-walking tactics used in the operation, which ultimately allowed hundreds of weapons to flow from the U.S. to violent Mexican drug cartels.</description>

      <title>Afghanistan Troop Reduction Plan</title>
      <description>Michelle Flournoy and Admiral Mike Mullen testified about President Obama's Afghanistan troop reduction plan. Admiral Mullen said he supported the president's plan to reduce U.S. troops in Afghanistan, but that the "president's decisions are more aggressive and incur more risk than I was originally prepared to accept." He later added "if the strategy if it's not working in a year or two, it needs to be reassessed" and that "we're now paying the price for walking away in 1989" from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The president's plan called for 10,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan to return home by the end of the year and a total of 33,000 troops by the end of the next summer.</description>

      <title>IRS E-File and Identity Theft</title>
      <description>Witnesses testified on identity theft problems at the Internal Revenue Service. Commissioner Douglas Shulman apologized to frustrated taxpayers who had been victims of identity theft by the IRS. The IRS had recently discovered over 400,000 incidents of identity theft since 2008. In many of these cases, thieves used the IRS E-File program to steal a taxpayer's income tax refund. Other witnesses at the hearing included victims of identity theft as well as an official from the  Government Accountability Office (GAO) which issued a report on these identity theft problems.</description>

      <description>The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee met to consider and adopt rules for the 112th Congress. Ranking Member Elijah Cummings offered several amendments for changing the rules package including an amendment to have Chair Darrell Issa seek full minority concurrence before issuing subpoenas. All amendments failed in committee vote; however, the chair said he would consult with Democrats on issuing subpoenas but would exercise his right to issue subpoenas unilaterally in some situations.</description>

      <title>Student Athletes and Concussions</title>
      <description>The House Education and Labor Committee held a hearing on pending legislation to reduce and more safely manage concussions in student athletes. Witnesses testified that student concussions have resulted in extremely impaired learning abilities and even death. They focused on proposed legislation that would establish national standards for student athletes who get concussions. According to a recent government report, between 2005-2008 about 400,000 student athletes suffered with a concussion, many undiagnosed.</description>

      <description>Witnesses testified about the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The legislation to prohibit employers from discriminating against minorities, and would prohibit bias on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Exempt from the bill were the armed services, veterans' service groups, religious organizations and groups with fewer than 15 employees.
In the third panel supporters and opponents of the bill testified about the prevalence of workforce discrimination and possible consequences of enacting  the legislation. Vandy Beth Glenn, who's transgender, her termination after she announced she was transitioning from male to female.</description>
