Private Memorials on Public Land

A coalition of veterans groups talked about their efforts to help protect privately-funded memorials on public land. Liberty Legal Institute had filed an amicus brief on their behalf in the case of [Pleasant Grove City v. Summum] to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court the next day. Pleasant Grove, Utah, was appealing a 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the city was violating the First Amendment rights of the Summum religious group by not accepting their monument in a park that already held a monument displaying the Ten Commandments. The veterans groups fear that this precedent would lead to all privately-funded monuments being removed. This would include thousands of veteran and war memorials.
