      <title>Eisenhower and Civil Rights</title>
      <description>Panelists talked about President Dwight D. Eisenhower's views and actions in regarding civil rights, including the desegregation of the armed forces, appointments of pro civil rights Supreme Court justices, and the decision to dispatch the 101st Airborne division to assist in the integration of Little Rock High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
This panel was part of a conference titled, "Ike Reconsidered: Lessons from the Eisenhower Legacy for the 21st Century" co-hosted by Hunter College, City University of New York, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute and the Eisenhower Foundation.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Eisenhower: The White House Years]</title>
      <description>Jim Newton recounts the tenure of President Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961). The author refutes the commonly held criticism that President Eisenhower was complacent by citing his transformation of an $8 billion deficit to a $500 million surplus, the creation of an interstate highway system, and the president's constant refusal to utilizethe atomic bomb when pressured by his generals. In his talk Mr. Newton focused on the president's appointment of Chief Justice Earl Warren and the [Brown v. Board of Eduction] decision. Jim Newton also responded to questons from members of the audience at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas.</description>

      <description>A panel discussion was held about the U.S. Constitution and changes in its wording, interpretation, and implementation over the years. Topics included changes in the courts and the implications they have. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience. 
Jim Newton, the moderator, is the author of [Justice for All: Earl Warren and the Nation He Made]. John Dean is the author of a trilogy concluding with [Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches]. Erwin Chemerinky is the author of [The Conservative Assault on the Constitution]. Henry Weinstein, a founding faculty member of the University of California-Irvine School of Law, is a long-time legal affairs reporter for the [Los Angeles Times].
"The Living Constitution" was a Taper Hall panel from the 2011 [Los Angeles Times] Festival of Books from the University Park Campus of the University of Southern California. The program opened with scenes of the festival and programming information.</description>

      <title>Politics, Supreme Court, and the Constitution</title>
      <description>Legal scholars spoke about the current make up and operations of the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as its future direction. They also talked about the growing influence of conservative legal theory on the federal judiciary and Erwin Chemerinsky's book [The Conservative Assault on the Constitution]. Professor Eastman is the chairman of the Federalist Society's Federalism and Separation of Powers practice group. The discussion was moderated by Jim Newton, author of [Justice for All: Earl Warren and the Nation He Made]. They responded to questions from members of the audience. 
"Is There a Conservative Assault on the Supreme Court?" was an "ALOUD at Central Library" program presented by the Los Angeles Library Foundation in the Mark Taper Auditorium of the Central Library.</description>

 Paula Giddings is the author of [Ida: A Sword Among Lions, Ida B. Wells and the Campaign Against Lynching], published by Amistad. Ida B. Wells (1862-1931), born to slaves in Mississippi, became a leading activist. Richard Reeves is the author of [A Force of Nature: The Frontier Genius of Ernest Rutherford], published by W.W. Norton, about the life and work of physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). Robert Roper is the author of [Now the Drum of War: Walt Whitman and His Brothers in the Civil War] (Walker and Company; October 28, 2008). The book is based on the correspondence of poet Walt Whitman among his brothers and his mother.
 
 "At the Gates of the 20th Century" was a 3:30 p.m. ET panel of the [Los Angeles Times] Festival of Books on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles.</description>

 Ronald White is the author of [A. Lincoln: A Biography] (Random House; January 13, 2009). In the book he recounts the life of Abraham Lincoln and added to the former president's biography via his research of the recently completed Lincoln Legal Papers. Jim Newton is the author of, [Justice for All: Earl Warren and the Nation He Made], {Riverhead; October 5, 2006), a biography of Earl Warren, the chief justice of the United States from 1953 to 1969. H.W. Brands is the author of [Traitor to His Class: The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt] ([Traitor to His Class: The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt ] (Doubleday; November 4, 2008), a comprehensive one-volume biography of the thirty-second president.

      <title>Book Discussion on [Justice for All: Earl Warren]</title>
      <description>Jim Newton talked about his biography, [Justice for All: Earl Warren and the Nation He Made], published by Riverhead. He recounted the life of Earl Warren, the chief justice of the United States from 1953 to 1969. He examined Chief Justice Warren's tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court where he presided over such historic cases as [Brown v. Board of Education], which desegregated schools; [Griswold v. Connecticut], which established a constitutional right of privacy; and [Engel v. Vitale], which outlawed prayer in public schools. Mr. Newton also focused on Earl Warren's earlier years as attorney general and later governor of California. After his presentation the author responded to audience members' questions.</description>
