Book Discussion on [The Next Attack: The Failure of the War on Terror]

Daniel Benjamin and Steve Simon talked about their book [The Next Attack: The Failure of the War on Terror and a Strategy for Getting it Right], published by Times Books. In the book, the authors showed how the terrorist threat is evolving, with a broadening array of tactics, an army of new fighters and a widening base of support in the global Muslim community. They made the case that America has the capacity to stem the tide of Islamic terrorism, but that this will require a far-reaching and creative new strategy, one that is less militarized and more committed to reform. They also argued that America's increasing tendency to frame the conflict in religious terms has undermined our ability to advance our interests.

After their presentation, the authors were joined in a panel discussion. After the discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.

Daniel Benjamin and Steve Simon are also the authors of [The Age of Sacred Terror], published by Random House. Paul Pillar was deputy chief of the Counterterrorist Center at the CIA and is the author of [Terrorism and U.S. Foreign Policy], published by Brookings Institution Press. U.S Senator Jack Reed is a member of the Armed Services Committee. Mr. Woodward is the author of [Plan of Attack] and of [Bush at War], both published by Simon and Schuster.
